Since its formation, NIRAS Fraenkel has had an association with the Port of London Authority and the Port of Tilbury and has been commissioned to carry out work on numerous facilities on the River Thames at Tilbury

The firm was responsible for the design of much of the Port’s modernisation programme, with the design and construction supervision of several major projects including the Flood Defence Gate at the Western Entrance, Lead-in Jetty, West Africa Terminal (Berths 32/33) and Coaster Jetty Extension to the Grain Terminal.  The Coaster Jetty provides a berth for vessels up to 90m in length and is equipped with two pneumatic booms having a maximum discharge rate of 200 tonnes of grain per hour.

Other projects at Tilbury have included structural analysis of quay walls to determine their capacity to accept new crane loads and surveys, inspections and reports on structural damage, followed by design of repairs and contract supervision.  After an extensive survey of concrete spalling on the Grain Terminal silos, a repair contract was awarded and works were supervised in accordance with the recommended comprehensive repair programme.

The firm has also designed new piled supports, with support steelwork for the conveyor tower foundation.  Since 2002, PFP have been responsible for annual inspection of the riverside landing stage and cruise terminal.
