Naval Base Treatment Facility, Vishakhaptnam - India

NIRAS Fraenkel have undertaken a major feasibility study for the Indian Navy into provision of new facilities in the naval base at Vishakhapatnam (Vizag) in Andhra Pradesh.

This investigated the provision of a “drive-in” magnetic measuring and treatment structure for a range of naval vessels including submarines to be located within an existing basin in the base. Various forms of enclosures were investigated based on the use of non-metallic materials.

The recommended arrangement consists of twin finger piers on stainless steel reinforced concrete piles between which vessels are positioned, supporting aluminium trusses which span between the piers and carry coils for 3- axis treatment of the vessels. Ship manoeuvring studies were carried out to determine an optimum operational layout within the basin, followed by a full bathymetric survey and site investigations for ground conditions. Inspection and structural assessment of an existing jetty which will provide access to the facility was also undertaken with recommendations for repair of reinforced concrete elements which had suffered corrosion damage of reinforcing steel.

When fully operational the facility at Vizag will be able to treat vessels on a 5 hour turnaround and will be one of the largest of its type in the world.
