Smiths Quay, Peterhead - UK

Detailed design and construction supervision of a 120m long suspended quay, a separate berthing/mooring dolphin, an 80m long rubble mound breakwater and 9,000m2 of reclamation. The Smith Quay is a westward extension of the existing outer harbour quays at Peterhead. The new quay structure which incorporates a heavy lift area, is of a novel construction. Steel box girders span from a bankseat on a rock mound to 1.4m diameter piles at the quay front. The piles are socketed into the granite rock which underlies Peterhead. The deck consists of prestressed TY3 bridge beams with in-situ concrete infill. The concrete deck acts compositely with the steel box girders to give a strong composite structure.

To facilitate the works 100,000 m³ of rock and soft materials were dredged and suitable material was combined with imported material to construct 9,000m² of reclamation behind the quay. The breakwater extension was built to provide wave protection at the new quay to maximise productive use for landing pelagic and white fi sh and for use by cargo vessels. Extensive numerical modelling was carried out for the breakwater design, culminating in physical model tests at Sogreah Laboratories in France. The final design is a rubble mound comprising local stone for core and under layers, with primary armour imported from Sweden.

This was a very technically challenging project, with an innovative design. The design was developed by NIRAS Fraenkel to meet Peterhead Port Authority’s budget, after a design and build tender exercise had brought in prices well in excess of their budget. The quay brought into service in October 2010 and was formally opened by the First Minister of Scotland, the Rt. Hon Alex Salmond on 21 March 2011. NFL were awarded a Design Commendation for this project by the Saltire Society.
