Port of Salalah, Salalah - Oman

NIRAS Fraenkel was appointed by Al-Qaem Petro Projects & Services LLC working for the Omani Ministry of Oil & Gas to carry out detailed design of repair and reconstruction of the petroleum jetty in Raysut Terminal in the Port of Salalah. The jetty is of considerable strategic importance to the Dhofar region of Oman as virtually all petroleum products for the region are imported through it. Constructed originally for Shell in the 1970’s it has suffered severe damage from chloride induced corrosion of reinforcing steel in berthing dolphins and access bridges. Shore foundations for mooring hooks are also severely damaged.

The jetty consists of four dolphins of gravity caisson construction supporting rubber fender units connected to the shore by concrete and steel bridges. All parts are severely damaged. The refurbishment scheme developed by NIRAS Fraenkel involves complete reconstruction of the upper parts of the dolphins with protection from marine borer attack in the lower parts, replacement of existing fenders with modern cone fenders to reduce berthing forces on the dolphins which are potentially unstable with the current fender arrangement. Construction is expected to commence after the 2013 Khareef.
