Ferry and Ro-Ro Terminals

Ferry and ro-ro terminals

Jointly with the NIRAS group, we have participated in ferry port projects in UK, Denmark and numerous other countries for over 70 years.

NIRAS was appointed by Shetland Islands Council to carry out feasibility studies and, working with a naval architect, to design Ro-Ro vehicle/ passenger ferries together with two new terminals for the Yell Sound route in Shetland. A number of sites for the new terminals were investigated taking into account factors such as wave effects, water depths, ground conditions and land access and optimum locations were recommended near the existing terminals at Toft and Ulsta.

NIRAS was responsible for the planning, contract administration, supervision and assessment of the results of a series of marine site investigations at both the proposed terminal locations. In addition one of the terminals provides a harbour of refuge for the ferries in storm conditions and, following an assessment of the marine physical environment, a substantial rubble mound breakwater was designed in order to provide the required protection.
